Built in 1949 as a movie house in the Hoblitzelle Theatre chain, the Campus Theatre was
purchased by GDAC in 1990 after members of the Denton
Community Theatre had conducted initial inquiries and negotiations as to the
availability of the structure. GDAC negotiated a 25-year agreement with the City of Denton to provide utility payments for the
Campus.
In 1993 GDAC and its member organizations undertook a capital campaign and raised
nearly 2 million dollars for a renovation that converted the Campus Theatre from a
run-down 1200-seat movie house into a modern 300-seat performing arts center taking care
to preserve the art deco flair of the original design.
The Campus Theatre is managed (per lease and contract with GDAC) by the Denton
Community Theatre and is home to numerous community performing arts organizations, most of
them GDAC members.
