Artist Statement & Artwork Photography Workshop

  • Patterson-Appleton Arts Center 400 East Hickory Street Denton, TX, 76201 United States (map)

“Don’t let good art become the victim of subpar photos and weak writing.”

Submitting to a juried exhibition requires more than great art—it requires great presentation. In many cases, your artist statement and photograph of your work are the first (and only) impression a juror has to your piece before making a decision.

That’s why the Greater Denton Arts Council and Artists Enclave of Denton County are proud to present this workshop to help artists strengthen the way they share their work with the world.

This workshop is free to attend! Join us and learn how to write compelling, effective artist statements and photograph your artwork professionally using a smartphone!

Meet the Presenters:

Jon Black, will lead the artist statement portion of the workshop. He is an award-winning author of historical fiction and a frequent speaker on the craft and business of writing at conventions and authors’ events around the country. Topics covered by his presentations include promotion, marketing, and branding. Jon is also an internationally published music journalist, speech writer, ghostwriter, and game designer. As a visual artist, his work explores the intersection of language and pop-culture iconography, drawing inspiration from movements such as cubism, dada, and surrealism.

Leanne Schulz, an artist in marketing who bridges creativity and strategy to help artists tell their stories visually, will lead the phone-tography session. As Marketing Coordinator at the University of North Texas’s G. Brint Ryan College of Business, Leanne works at the intersection of art, content creation, and digital storytelling—specializing in social media marketing, photography, video, and podcast production.

This hands-on Phone-tography Workshop is designed for artists who want to capture their work authentically and confidently using the tools they already have. Open to both iOS and Android users, the workshop covers practical techniques for photographing artwork, creative spaces, and process shots, as well as capturing simple, effective video for social media and online promotion.
