Asking questions - Ellen Frenkel

Ellen Frenkel has lived around the world and learned from many places and many institutions, but it wasn’t until she retired from UNT that she found a voice in making fiber art about a world that was not kind or just. In dealing with difficult subjects, sometimes a little levity and beauty are needed, as in this exhibit.

About her work, Ellen says, “I love working in fiber because it offers so many ways to express. Lace can make for handwriting hard truths, dyed silk can reflect the light in the same way that faces and flowers do, and they can scrunch and twist like nothing else. Hemp is rugged, but not easy to dye. Each story, or “question” calls for expression through a different medium. Thank you to the Greater Denton Arts Council for the Microgrant that made this work possible.”
