Intersections, Voices in Feminist Art
One of GDAC’s newest additions to our signature shows, Intersections took inspiration from modern and contemporary feminist theory concerning solidarity, community and connection. As our first entirely installation based show, the work on display was designed and built by individual artists or groups working in collaboration.
Installation art breaks the plane of fixed walls and creates its own space, shaped by the artist's imagination and intention. Much like the freedom dreamers in our society, women have been at the heart of caring for their communities through social and political upheaval and injustice and who have fought for more space and more representation. This exhibition explores the ways contemporary women artists and theorists use art and space-making to express and challenge their lived experiences in today's society and ever-changing world.
Intersections also featured four additional artworks from TWU students taking Dr. Agatha Beins’ course, "Art, Activism, and Social Justice." These works reimagined and recontextualized self-portraiture in light of the contemporary feminist theory guiding the main exhibition installations.
