Bryce Gray
Layers of the Frontier, 2024
Screen print on wood
12 x 18 x 12 inches
Artist Statement:
This work serves as a breakdown of the formation of the American West, weaving together narratives of the meat industry, gold mines, technological advancements, and the displacement of Native Americans driven by manifest destiny. The work aims to display the vast array of individuals who inhabited these frontier landscapes and how these cultural aspects are reflected in modern-day culture.
When the slabs are flipped around, a meaty texture is revealed, shifting the perspective to enhance the narrative of the western exploitation for profit.
