Call for Art: GDAC Building Sign -
Leave your permanent mark on the historic Patterson-Appleton Arts Center
Opened in 1929, our flagship facility originally powered the City of Denton’s electric supply with steam engines. Upon the 1984 renovation into an arts center, it became the power supply for Denton’s creative energy and artistic community. The building itself has had many names in its lifetime: the Visual Arts Center, the Center for the Visual Arts, and finally, the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center (PAAC), in dedication to Roy Appleton Jr. and Fred and Patsy Patterson. But it’s lacked an exterior sign clearly stating its identity as GDAC’s home and headquarters.
Now, we have the privilege of seeking a new exterior sign for the PAAC, designed by a local Denton artist. And that artist could be YOU! If you’re an artist or designer aged 18 or older, we welcome you to submit a design proposal with an original sign concept that will serve as a welcoming visual identifier for GDAC. We’re looking for designs that will compliment the historic architecture and character of the building, are engaging and friendly to the public, and are durbale enough to withstand long-term outdoor installation in the Texas climate. Thanks to the generosity of the Denton Benefit League, we’re able to offer the selected artist (or artists, if you choose to collaborate with a team) $5,000 for the design and creation of the sign. All expenses relating to installing the sign will be covered by the City of Denton.
The deadline to submit design proposals is Friday, March 13 at 11:00PM. All applications and materials must be emailed to our Executive Director, Krissi Oden at krissi.oden@dentonarts.com.
All proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Artistic quality and creativity
Clarity and feasibility of the design
Durability and appropriateness for outdoor use
Alignment with the mission and spirit of the Arts Center
Demonstrated ability to complete the project within budget. We understand that the $5000 might not cover all the expenses related to your design, so please be sure to include a budget that will cover all costs involved, not including install.
