Splash! Opening Performance & Reception - Oct. 3, 2024

This evening Meadows Gallery was transformed into a kinetic, mesmerizing experience during the opening performance of our latest exhibition, SPLASH! Dr. Adesola Akinleye and Dr. Helen Kindred of DancingStrong Movement Lab delivered the first of a series of performances and workshops to come as part of this immersive and multidisciplinary project. TWU’s Brittany Padilla sang live and played keyboard over sounds of raindrops, flowing water, and whirling currents to incorporate full sensory experience.

SPLASH! is a wholly unique exhibition for its invitation of community involvement to dance and make art in real time alongside the dancers. Drs. Akinleye and Kindred led audience members at the opening performance to the gallery floor to move and explore the space with them, making shadows among the projections with lengths of airy fabric and hand-held props in the shapes of goddess heads and reaching arms from paintings by visual artists Andrew Hinton, Mary Rodrigues, and Cheniece Warner. These props are still available in Meadows Gallery for visitors to pick up and dance with during gallery hours, not limited only to performances and workshops. You’ll also find in the back right corner of the gallery there is a station at which to draw your own artwork inspired by the exhibition and hang on the wall as part of the community art section. We absolutely encourage you to come and create with us!

The next SPLASH! performance will be on Thursday Oct. 17 from 7 - 8 PM featuring TWU’s Makayla Rosenberger, who has previously performed at the PAAC presenting her original choreography in Movement Across Mediums this past February. The following week on Thursday Oct. 24 from 5:30 - 8 PM there will be an interactive workshop in partnership with Good Samaritans. Both of these events are free and open to the public. See you there!
