Luminous Noise from the Empty Orchestra, 2024

Steel, holographic streamers, projection

In consideration of a pre-colonial lost language and writing script of the Philippines, called Baybayin, “Luminous Noise from the Empty Orchestra” aims to conflate language into line as means of crafting forward an offering of new meaning making, in the form of a sculpture. The cut steel of the piece spells out “Du-S-T Bu-Ni,” my artist name, which started out as a drag name. In response to the lack of cultural consistency and ever-shifting communities in my personal life, the sculpture becomes a queer portal of sorts that craves a language I am trying to speak, but perhaps I am speaking a totally new one.

About:

Sebastien Hubiera, also known as, Dust Bunny, is a practicing multi-disciplinary artist from Austin, TX, and works within the DFW area studying New Media Art at the University of North Texas. They continue to explore their identity as a 1st generation queer Filipino American and the unexpected experiences of everyday life through performance, drag, sculpture, and projection mapping. In hopes of making sense of these experiences, Dust Bunny plays off distinguishable cultural forms and symbols as caricature (Bunny) while introspectively distorting those associations into intangible understandings of such (Dust).
